To be constantly updated as new questions arise.

How I Met Your Mother is an American show and as such, it contains Americanism, particularly those in the New York metropolitan area. As such, some of the jokes might go over people outside the US's heads. This is the beginning of the guide to Americanisms found in HIMYM. Here are the first few. To ask for a definition of any Americanisms, just comment and I will add a new definition to the guide.

Bennigan's: An American chain restaurant advertised as an Irish pub. The only the only thing Irish about it is foods drenched in Guinness sauce. The walls of your typical Bennigan's are crammed with sports memorabilia, random book cases filled with prop books, and stereotypical Irish knick-nacks. Very cluttered look. Bennigan's refusal to update caused the franchise to fall to the likes of TGIFridays. Barney's joke about Ted's apartment looking like a Bennigan's meant he was calling the thing extremely dated and cluttered.

Fluffernutter: Despite the name, a fluffernutter is not a candy bar. It is a type of sandwich using white bread with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff, this spreadable topping that comes in a jar. The fluffernutter refers to the components of the sandwich. Loved by kids on playgrounds, but extremely unhealthy for the sugar content.

Tootsie Roll: Small chewy candy that is supposed to taste like chocolate. The kind of candy you only eat for the sugar high because you ran out of the good quality candy in your trick or treat bag. Also comes in fruit flavors, equally as bad tasting. The choice of cheap people buying Halloween candy.

When does anybody say "Fluffernutter"? That one completely passed me by!

Spoiler Alert. It's on Marshall's candy-littered shopping list.

That's kids for you. Liking what no one else would eat while hating everything else. It's a rarity to not see a kid that's a picky eater.

I'm a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes, one of the strips where I was the most annoyed by Calvin was when he was on a road trip with his parents and refused to eat anything but hamburgers and for some reason his parents completely capitulated to him and wound up eating at nothing but burger places. Um, isn't the point of a restaurant that everyone can get something different if they want to? I'd be pissed if I had to put up with a kid like that.

There's a theory that the media is instilling in kids a loathing to certain foods because the characters hate them.
